El viejo gotoso permaneció sentado e inmóvil durante toda la ceremonia, con sus mal encajados anteojos, en medio de la pompa del Gran Salón del palacio de Bruselas. El propio salón estaba adornado con ricos tapices, entre ellos uno con escenas de la vida de Gedeón, el asesino de madianitas. Carlos V, el Sacro Emperador Romano, había decidido abdicar a su trono y esta ceremonia, el jueves 25 de octubre de 1555, era el punto culminante de una serie de actos mediante los cuales renunciaba al poder. Como gobernante hereditario de Holanda, Carlos había convocado ante él a los Estados Generales, una especie de parlamento, para que fuesen testigos de su último acto de abjuración.1
Entonces el emperador procedió a justificar su vida. Desde el momento de su elección como Sacro Emperador Romano en 1519, a Carlos lo habían limitado sus extraordinarios compromisos. Su vida como emperador había estado marcada por una sucesión casi interminable de campañas militares contra monarcas rivales de Europa, especialmente el rey francés, Francisco, contra los turcos otomanos y, últimamente, contra la herejía y la rebelión en Alemania. Como cabeza de la familia imperial de los Habsburgo, y como heredero, por la línea materna, de la corona española, Carlos había emprendido aventuras militares que habían acabado provocando una crisis financiera. En el transcurso de su reinado, había logrado obtener préstamos sin precedentes de los centros financieros del Europa occidental. Entre 1520 y 1532, había pedido prestados 5,4 millones de ducados. Hacia el final de sus días como emperador, entre 1552 y 1556, ya debía una suma de 9,6 millones de ducados. (De acuerdo con los valores actuales, eso equivale más o menos a seiscientos millones y mil millones de dólares respectivamente, tasando el oro a mil dólares la onza). El ducado era una moneda veneciana introducida en 1284 que, junto al florín florentino, fue la más usada en Europa durante todo el periodo medieval y los comienzos de la modernidad.2 El aumento de los gastos había venido acompañado por un incremento en la tasa de interés que Carlos tenía que pagar a sus banqueros. Habiendo pagado un interés anual de cerca del dieciocho por ciento sobre los préstamos recibidos en la década de 1520, en la década de 1550 se le exigieron unos intereses de casi el cincuenta por ciento.3
El hijo de Carlos, Felipe, un hombre delgado que no llegaba a los treinta, con el cabello rubio y el famoso mentón prominente de los Habsburgo, se enfrentó a enormes dificultades financieras. Y adoptó una medida drástica. Al ascender al trono con plenos poderes en julio de 1556, el joven monarca descubrió que todos los ingresos españoles habían sido comprometidos para pagar los préstamos y sus intereses. Ante esta perspectiva, el nuevo rey simplemente suspendió todos los pagos a sus banqueros en enero de 1557.4 Felipe recurrió varias veces al truco de declararse en bancarrota: el 1 de septiembre de 1575, anunció la segunda de su reinado. La suspensión de los pagos a los banqueros por segunda vez creó agitación entre las tropas españolas en Holanda, una frustración que provenía del impago de sus salarios. Al pasar los meses, los soldados se volvieron cada vez más incontrolables. El 4 y el 5 de noviembre saquearon la ciudad de Amberes. Este suceso ha sido recordado largo tiempo como la “furia española” de Amberes en 1576.5
Las humillantes declaraciones de bancarrota y la constante necesidad de más dinero no estaban previstas cuando se produjo el gran descubrimiento del tesoro del Nuevo Mundo. Los historiadores y escritores de la corte española habían celebrado con prosa acaramelada el inesperado golpe de suerte que supusieron el oro y la plata de las Indias. Pedro Mejía escribió en su Historia del emperador Carlos V (1545) que “Dios reservó a este príncipe el gran favor y fortuna de descubrir las provincias del Perú, donde se ocultaba tan gran tesoro de oro y plata, cuyo igual no vieron los siglos pasados, ni creo yo que habrán de creer los venideros”.6
Las circunstancias en las que se produjo la entrada en España de aquel fuerte flujo de oro y plata habían sido extraordinarias. Un puñado de aventureros españoles, en las primeras décadas tras el descubrimiento de América por Cristóbal Colón en 1492, habían conquistado y prácticamente esclavizado un continente entero, hasta entonces desconocido para los europeos. El descubrimiento español del Nuevo Mundo ha sido llamado el “mayor acontecimiento de la historia”.7 Sus protagonistas, hombres como Hernán Cortés y Francisco Pizarro, se hicieron célebres en vida. Entre las poblaciones nativas, los españoles eran vistos como superhombres, dotados de poderes mágicos y de una codicia sobrehumana. “Aunque se trocasen en oro las nieves de los Andes aún no quedarían saciados”, comentó Manco, el noble inca que se encontró con Pizarro en la década de 1530. En México, Cortés les dijo a los aztecas que él y sus hombres “padecían de una enfermedad del corazón que solo podía curarse con oro”.8 Un joven conquistador e historiador de aquella época, Pedro Cieza de León, se animó a navegar hasta Perú tras contemplar cómo descargaban enormes montones de oro inca en Sevilla: “Mientras viva no podré apartarlo de mi mente”.10
